Progress is taking shape at the source of Nairobi River!

Yesterday, we conducted a comprehensive site inspection and project evaluation meeting for the ongoing Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project at Ondiri Wetland. The exercise brought together the multi agency team led by Colonel Njoroge, the contractor, the project consultant, Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya (FOWK), and other key stakeholders committed to restoring this invaluable ecosystem.

The team reviewed the impressive progress of several flagship developments, including an open air amphitheatre, scenic nature trails, a resource centre, a research centre, modern sanitary facilities, picnic sites, bird watching towers, a pedestrian bridge, perimeter fencing, and modern entrance gates. These world class facilities will not only improve visitor experience but also strengthen conservation, environmental education, scientific research, ecotourism, and sustainable community livelihoods.

As the birthplace of the Nairobi River, Ondiri Wetland occupies a unique place in Kenya's natural heritage. Its restoration marks a significant milestone in the wider Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Programme, which seeks to revive Nairobi's river systems from their source to their confluence. Upon completion, Ondiri will stand as a model of wetland conservation and one of Kenya's leading ecological and educational destinations.

Recognizing the urgency of the project, the inspection team directed the contractor to accelerate construction and maximize the current favourable weather conditions before the anticipated El Niño rains become more intense. Fast tracking the works will help ensure timely completion while maintaining the highest quality standards.

The transformation of Ondiri Wetland is no longer just a vision. It is becoming a reality. Every trail, every tree, every bridge, and every facility being developed today is an investment in a cleaner environment, healthier rivers, richer biodiversity, and a greener future for Kiambu, Nairobi and generations to come.
