Leadership in Action: Reflections from the PUSA Debate at Presbyterian University of East Africa

Today I had the honour of attending the PUSA debate at the Presbyterian University of East Africa (PUEA), where student leaders courageously articulated their visions, values, and convictions as they sought various leadership positions.

I was deeply grateful for the invitation from the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Marketing and Communication Department. I carried with me warm greetings from Friends of Ondiri and from a wider community that believes firmly in leadership rooted in service, integrity, and responsibility.

What stood out was not merely the eloquence of the candidates, but their willingness to be questioned, challenged, and held accountable. That willingness alone is a powerful act of leadership. Debates like these remind us that leadership is not about titles or microphones, but about trust, responsibility, and the impact our decisions have on others.

I shared with the aspirants and students three guiding principles that have shaped my own journey in community and public service: to lead with integrity, even when it is costly; to lead with humility, by listening and learning; and to lead with purpose, anchored in service rather than self-interest.

As young leaders, the habits formed within the university setting will echo far beyond campus. How we handle disagreement, exercise influence, and care for our shared spaces prepares us not only for student leadership, but for national and global responsibility.

I commend the Presbyterian University of East Africa for cultivating democratic engagement and ethical leadership. Such forums are not just academic exercises; they are laboratories for the future of our nation.

To the aspirants, I wish you wisdom, courage, and grace in both victory and defeat. To the students, may you always choose leaders based on values, vision, and consistency. And to all, may our leadership journeys be guided by service, strengthened by integrity, and inspired by hope.

Grateful. Encouraged. Inspired. Amor vincit omnia!!
