Four Rivers, One Source: The Hidden Water Network of Ondiri Wetland

Many people know the Nairobi River, but few know where its lifeblood begins. The attached map illustrates the four rivers associated with Kikuyu Sub-County whose waters originate from the unique Ondiri Wetland, Kenya's only high-altitude peat bog and the source of the Nairobi River system.

These rivers are:

Nyongara River – the only river with a direct surface source from Ondiri Wetland.

Kabuthi River – sustained by underground water recharge from Ondiri.

Gitwe Kia Mbagathi (Mbagathi Springs) – fed through subterranean channels from the wetland.

Rungiri River – whose waters are supported by the same underground recharge system.

Together, these rivers demonstrate the remarkable role of Ondiri Wetland as a natural water tower, supporting homes, farms, ecosystems, and communities far beyond Kikuyu. Protecting Ondiri means safeguarding our water, reducing floods, conserving biodiversity, and preserving an invaluable heritage for future generations.
