Supporting Nairobi’s KSh80 Billion Transformation: A Vision for a World-Class Capital

I support and praise the President for unveiling the KSh80 billion cooperation agreement that boldly reimagines Nairobi as a livable, secure, and efficient capital for its 4.4 million residents. This decision demonstrates clarity of purpose, fiscal courage, and an understanding that a capital city must work flawlessly to mirror national ambition.

President Ruto, Governor Sakaja's Ksh.80B Nairobi plan

From lighting, power, water, sanitation, roads, drainage, housing services, and solid waste management, this integrated approach tackles long-standing bottlenecks with scale and seriousness. It is the kind of intervention Nairobi deserves and one that will unlock productivity, dignity, safety, and opportunity for millions.

Importantly, the National Capital County should be run directly by the National Government. Nairobi is not an ordinary county; it is the face of Kenya. Indeed, we should have a dedicated Cabinet Secretary for Nairobi City to ensure coordination, accountability, and speed of execution. Globally, capitals such as Washington, DC, Canberra, Abuja, and Brasília are managed under special national arrangements, precisely because capitals carry national symbolism and strategic importance.

I further strongly support the proposal that all tributaries of the Nairobi River fall under this unified management framework. Protecting and restoring these streams from the source is the only sustainable way to achieve a clean river, a healthy city, and resilient ecosystems.

This bold partnership elevates Nairobi’s future and affirms Kenya’s readiness to build a world-class African metropolis that works for all, now and for generations.
