Today, Friends of Ondiri Wetland joined the residents of Kikuyu and the Member of Parliament for Kikuyu, Honourable Kimani Ichung’wah, at the Affordable Housing Project site for a special Valentine’s Day Open Day and Show House Viewing. The event invited families and community members to tour completed show houses, obtain information on registration and ownership, and have all their questions answered.
The occasion was not simply an open day but a celebration of progress and hope. It reminded us that the greatest love story often begins where comfort, dignity, security and belonging meet. The Boma Yangu Kikuyu Estate, part of Kenya’s national Affordable Housing Programme, embodies that vision by creating modern homes where families can thrive. This development is strategically located next to the Gitaru Interchange, where major transport corridors converge, providing seamless access to Nairobi’s Central Business District approximately 15 kilometres away and to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport roughly 20 kilometres distant. Its location near vibrant market centres, social amenities and employment hubs makes it not only a place to live but a gateway to opportunity and economic inclusion. The estate will ultimately deliver more than one thousand well-designed homes across nine residential blocks with a mix of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units, alongside community spaces, green open areas, a commercial centre and water infrastructure that enhance quality of life. The project is more than housing; it is a thoughtful and inclusive community. More than five hundred local young people are currently employed on site, gaining valuable work experience and skills that will empower them long after construction is complete.
Honourable Ichung’wah has been a steadfast champion for sustainable development in this region. He has championed Kenya’s 15 Billion Trees Initiative, one of the nation’s most ambitious climate action programmes. His dedication to environmental stewardship is evident in his earlier leadership in planting the largest bamboo grove at Ondiri Wetland years ago, a living testament to the power of nature-based solutions and community action. In recognition of his unwavering commitment and great leadership in environmental conservation, Friends of Ondiri Wetland presented Honourable Ichung’wah with a Medal of Recognition at today’s event.
The presence of Friends of Ondiri Wetland at the occasion underscores the vital connection between conservation and urban development. Ondiri Wetland is a crucial source of water for surrounding communities and future infrastructure, and its health is essential for sustainable growth. We also reaffirmed today our commitment to safeguard Karai Wetland, which is poised to support a future agri-processing city and an additional three thousand homes near the KARI area. These ecosystems will not only provide vital water resources but will also help sustain climate-resilient landscapes as our towns grow.
This vision for balanced development echoes successful examples from other parts of the world. Singapore, an East Asian economy often cited as an Asian tiger, transformed its urban landscape through large-scale public housing managed by the Housing and Development Board. Today, well over eighty percent of Singaporeans live in high-quality, government-supported homes, cultivating a strong sense of ownership and community while supporting broader economic growth and social stability.
As we look to the future, it is clear that Kikuyu is charting a course toward a resilient, inclusive and prosperous tomorrow. We congratulate Honourable Kimani Ichung’wah for his leadership and present him with our heartfelt appreciation for amplifying the voice of conservation, development and community well-being. Through out his leadership, he has demonstrated that sustainable growth and nature conservation can go hand in hand, and that a greener, more liveable future for Kikuyu and its people is well within reach.
