Conservation Concert Opens the 2026 Wetlands Festival at Ondiri Wetland

It was truly a memorable and inspiring day at the Conservation Concert, marking the successful opening of our Wetlands Festival. We were deeply honoured to host Dr. Mamo B. Mamo, PhD, EBS, the Director General of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), as our Chief Guest. His presence and words of encouragement reaffirmed the critical role that wetlands play in environmental sustainability and national development.

Dr. Mamo was accompanied by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Evans Nyabuto, and a dedicated team from NEMA Kiambu, led by the County Director of Environment, Mr. John Maniafu. Their strong institutional support underscored NEMA’s continued commitment to wetland conservation and community-led environmental stewardship.

The colourful and vibrant concert brought together talented artists and creatives who use their voices, music, and art to champion environmental conservation. Through powerful performances and cultural expression, the concert beautifully demonstrated how art and culture can be effective tools for raising awareness and inspiring collective action to protect our natural heritage.

As we move forward with the Wetlands Festival, the journey continues tomorrow, Friday, with the Wetlands Business Expo, showcasing innovative, sustainable, and nature-positive enterprises that align livelihoods with conservation. On Saturday, we culminate the festival with the highly anticipated Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run, bringing together conservationists, athletes, institutions, and the wider community in a shared commitment to protect Ondiri Wetland.

All these activities are anchored on the 2026 World Wetlands Day theme: “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.” Through this theme, we celebrate the wisdom of indigenous and local communities, recognizing traditional knowledge as a vital pillar in wetland conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

Together, we continue to build momentum, strengthen partnerships, and inspire action to safeguard wetlands for present and future generations.
