Today, the Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya (FOWK) team marked Madaraka Day by spending a meaningful day with the children of Tumaini Children's Home, Ondiri.
Five years ago, we established an orchard at the home, and today it stands as a shining example of what sustainable environmental action can achieve. The orchard has become a reliable source of fresh fruits for the children and an important income-generating activity for the institution. The Hass avocado trees, in particular, have thrived remarkably well and continue to bear fruit both literally and figuratively.
As an organization, we are committed to going beyond environmental conservation and embracing sustainability across the entire tree value chain. Planting trees is only the beginning; nurturing them into productive assets that improve livelihoods and strengthen communities is the ultimate goal.
In the last week of June, we shall return to Tumaini Children's Home to continue this noble work under our Green a School Project, just as we did a month ago at Nyumbani Children's Home, Karen. Our vision is ambitious but achievable: every school and children's centre within a 10-kilometre radius of Ondiri Wetland should have either a productive orchard or a Miyawaki forest.
Beyond tree growing, FOWK also runs a vibrant mentorship programme through our Citizen Science Department, empowering young people with environmental knowledge, leadership skills, and a deeper appreciation of nature and sustainable living.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who continues to believe in and support this cause. Your partnership is helping us create greener landscapes, healthier communities, and brighter futures for the next generation.
Together, we are growing more than trees—we are growing hope, resilience, and lasting change.
Growing trees. Nurturing children. Building sustainable futures. Join us as we transform communities one orchard and one forest at a time.
