Our Achievements

Since our establishment in 2016, Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya (FOWK) has made tremendous progress in safeguarding and restoring the Ondiri ecosystem while empowering the local community.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Establishment of the Ondiri Wetland Information Center – Serving as a hub for environmental education, research, and community engagement on wetland conservation.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Strategic Partnership with NEMA – Collaborated to develop the Ondiri Wetland Management Plan and construct an eco-toilet facility promoting sustainable tourism and hygiene. Ondiri Wetland Information Center

    Hosting of National Environmental Events
    • World Wetlands Day (2022) – National celebration by NEMA.
    • National Landscape & Ecosystem Restoration Program (2023) – With the Ministry of Environment.
    • Chiefs Climate Action Program (2024) – With the Ministry of Interior.
    • World Wetlands Day (2025) – Hosted for the second time.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run – Successfully organized and sustained the annual Ondiri Conservation Run, now entering its 5th Edition.

    Protection from Encroachment and Pollution – Collaborated with local authorities and the community to stop illegal dumping, drainage, and land grabbing around the wetland.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Youth and Community Empowerment – Trained and engaged hundreds of youth, women, and local residents in environmental conservation and sustainable livelihoods.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Environmental Education and Awareness – Conducted numerous school outreach programs, clean-ups, and community sensitization campaigns on wetland conservation.

    Partnerships and Recognition – Built strong collaborations with agencies such as Kenya Forest Service, KEFRI, and conservation networks.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Tree Growing and Restoration Initiatives – Facilitated planting of 30,000+ indigenous trees supporting Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Initiative.

    Ondiri Wetland Information Center Tourism and Research Promotion – Positioned Ondiri as a national model for eco-tourism and citizen science, attracting researchers, students, and visitors.
