BRIEF REPORT ON MULTI-AGENCY ENGAGEMENT – ONDIRI WETLAND (NRRP)

A multi-agency team led by Col. Njoroge Kahigu, alongside Commissioners Rael Chebichii Lelei, Josephat Sagero, and Dr. Charles Dadu Karisa, and supported by teams from the Nairobi Rivers Commission (including Major Mwangi and Major Mathenge), WRA, NGAO, Survey of Kenya, the project consultant led by Augustine Shitote, Friends of Ondiri, and the contractor, conducted a joint engagement and site evaluation at Ondiri Wetland.
This follows the public participation and sensitization notice issued on 24th July 2026, inviting stakeholders to deliberate on the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project (NRRP), including riparian demarcation in line with Kenya Gazette Notice No. 18375.
The team reviewed ongoing works, including fencing, nature trail development, an ablution block, resource center, bridge, bird-watching towers, park benches, and an amphitheater. A field assessment revealed that a few landowners along the western loop had denied access to the 10-metre riparian reserve and were absent from the meeting despite invitations.
It was resolved that fencing will proceed as per the approved demarcation, with security deployed to support implementation. A follow-up meeting will be held within three weeks, with at least 14 days’ notice, to enhance stakeholder participation.
Friends of Ondiri reiterates the importance of inclusive engagement, noting that the wetland is a shared ecological resource requiring collaboration among all stakeholders for sustainable conservation.
