In 1887, long before the railway reached Nairobi and before the first Christian mission was established in Kikuyu, a Hungarian count walked into the country of Waiyaki wa Hinga. Their encounter, remembered as a meeting sealed in friendship, offers a remarkable glimpse into the quiet moments before Kenya’s colonial history took a darker turn.
