Today, 8th June 2026, the world celebrates World Oceans Day under the theme "Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, a New Relationship with Our Ocean."
Covering more than 70% of the Earth's surface, the ocean is the lifeblood of our planet. It regulates the climate, produces much of the oxygen we breathe, supports millions of livelihoods, and sustains an extraordinary diversity of life.
This year's theme challenges us to rethink how we interact with the ocean. Rather than viewing it merely as a resource to exploit, we are called to recognize it as a living system that connects and sustains all life on Earth. Reimagining our relationship with the ocean means embracing sustainable practices, reducing pollution, protecting marine biodiversity, and investing in restoration efforts.
For Kenya, with its 536-kilometre coastline along the Indian Ocean, the ocean presents immense opportunities through the Blue Economy, including fisheries, tourism, maritime trade, and marine conservation. Protecting these resources is essential for our environmental and economic future.
As climate change, plastic pollution, and habitat destruction continue to threaten marine ecosystems, World Oceans Day reminds us that the future of humanity is closely linked to the health of our oceans.
Let us reimagine, restore, and protect our oceans for present and future generations.
A healthy ocean means a healthy planet.
