Celebration, Learning, and Conservation at Ondiri Wetland

Yesterday at Ondiri Wetland, we experienced a truly remarkable and memorable day marked by celebration, learning, and renewed commitment to conservation.

We had the joy of celebrating the birthday of a four-year-old conservationist, Thayù, graciously hosted by his loving family; his father George, his mother Njoki (one of the founders of Ondiri Wetland), his grandmother, and his extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. It was a powerful reminder that the values of environmental stewardship can be nurtured from a very young age.

We planted 120 trees using the Miyawaki method, creatively designed in the shape of the map of Kenya. In time, this tiny forest will grow to mirror the outline of our nation, a living symbol of unity, resilience, and hope for the future.

We also marked the successful conclusion of an entrepreneurship training programme led by Juan from Malaysia, made possible through the support of Isaac Mwangi, Founder of Marafiki Community International. This initiative has empowered our youth at FOWK with valuable skills that complement conservation through sustainable livelihoods.

In addition, we were honoured by a visit from Njeri and Dominic, the founders of Njeri Mazingira, who are undertaking outstanding environmental work in Nyeri County. Their presence further strengthened the spirit of collaboration and shared purpose.

We are deeply grateful for the strong partnerships and great sacrifices that have sustained this journey over the past ten years. Indeed, the future of conservation in Kikuyu is bright, and together, we continue to nurture it with hope and determination.
