Across many communities, women continue to play a central role in shaping families, driving local economies, and safeguarding the environment. They are, in essence, the guiding force of Mother Nature. Yet for a long time, their contributions, especially in conservation and community leadership, have often gone unrecognized. Through organisations such as Friends of Ondiri Wetland Kenya (FOWK), this narrative is gradually changing, creating spaces where women are not only included but actively empowered to lead.
One of the most significant impacts of FOWK has been the promotion of women’s leadership in community and environmental work. By involving women in planning community engagements, e.g. the run, and in the implementation of various projects, e.g. climate works, women have been given a fair chance to compete for job placements.
FOWK helps shift women’s roles from passive participants to active decision-makers and change-makers. A good example is Njeri Mazingira, who has gone ahead and established a strong environmental conservation movement, the Njeri Mazingira Initiative, under the strong mentorship of FOWK. This has strengthened confidence and encouraged more women to take up conservation initiatives.
Beyond leadership, FOWK has contributed to economic empowerment. Many women have earned a livelihood via FOWK, enabling them to sustain their families. Activities such as tree planting, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and environmental awareness campaigns create opportunities for women to build skills that can lead to sustainable livelihoods.
Through training sessions and mentorship, women gain knowledge on climate change, environmental conservation, and sustainability. This knowledge does not remain at an individual level; it spreads into households and the community, influencing daily habits and attitudes toward the environment.
Another important outcome is the amplification of women’s voices in spaces where they have historically been underrepresented. FOWK provides platforms, e.g. a common groups with all relevant stakeholders and timely discussions, where women can speak, share ideas, and contribute to discussions on community development and environmental policies. This inclusion strengthens not only gender equity but also the quality of decisions being made, as diverse perspectives lead to more effective solutions.
In conclusion , the impact of FOWK on women goes beyond participation; it is about transformation. It is about building confidence, creating opportunities, and ensuring that women are recognized as essential leaders in both community development and environmental stewardship. As these efforts continue, they contribute to stronger, more resilient communities where everyone has a role in shaping the future.
