Citizen Science Observations on Tree Seedling Growth at Ondiri Wetland

Today, our team continued efforts to align with the 15 Billion Tree Agenda. Restoration activities were carried out at Ondiri Wetland despite the numerous human activities taking place there. The ongoing enhancement of the circular economy clearly demonstrates our commitment to aligning with SDG No. 13.
Tree Planting and Citizen Science
Earlier in the day, we transplanted established seedlings of mountain pawpaw and tamarind. To complement our indigenous species, we also introduced an exotic species, Grevillea robusta, thereby increasing diversity.
Observations on Grevillea robusta revealed that germination success and growth were strongly influenced by temperature and sun exposure. Seedlings exposed to sunlight performed better, contributing valuable insights to our citizen science work. The nursery was watered according to the specific water requirements of each species.
Miyawaki Forest and Biodiversity
Our team also participated in maintaining the Miyawaki forest established last December.

This resilience was evident as the trees achieved an 80 percent survival rate despite harsh weather conditions. Thanks to the efforts of Friends of Ondiri Wetland, the resilience of these trees was clear.
We also reintroduced sunflowers, which play a vital role in supporting bee populations—crucial pollinators—as well as bird species.
To promote food security and potential carbon banking in the future, we added:
- Hass avocados
- Loquats
- Prunus africana
- Markhamia lutea
- Croton megalocarpus
Circular Economy in Practice
The circular economy aspect was demonstrated through our continued use of disposed plastics and bottles for drip irrigation.
These activities collectively contributed to our mission of restoring and safeguarding this vital source.
