Every year on June 5, the world marks World Environment Day, the largest global platform for environmental awareness and action. In Kenya, it is the most important national day dedicated to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
This year, the national celebrations will be held at Arboretum Gardens in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County, under the theme "Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future." The theme reminds us that nature remains our strongest ally in addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and environmental degradation.
Among the ecosystems that best illustrate this message is Ondiri Wetland in Kikuyu, one of Kenya's most important wetlands and the source of the Nairobi River. Often overlooked, Ondiri quietly performs critical ecological functions. It stores and filters water, recharges groundwater, supports biodiversity, and helps regulate local climate conditions. The health of the Nairobi River begins at the health of Ondiri Wetland.
Today, Kenya is witnessing renewed commitment to environmental restoration through the ongoing Nairobi River regeneration programme championed by President William Ruto. The initiative seeks to restore the river, improve sanitation, reclaim riparian areas, and create a cleaner and healthier environment for millions of residents.
The efforts of the Nairobi Rivers Commission have also been instrumental in coordinating restoration activities, mobilizing stakeholders, and promoting sustainable management of the river ecosystem. Their work demonstrates that environmental restoration is not only about nature but also about public health, livelihoods, and national pride.
As we celebrate World Environment Day 2026, we must recognize that the future of our rivers, wetlands, forests, and communities is interconnected. Protecting source ecosystems such as Ondiri Wetland is essential for ensuring clean water, climate resilience, and ecological sustainability.
Nature has sustained humanity for generations. The responsibility now rests with us to protect and restore it. Let us be inspired by nature, act for the climate, and secure a greener future for generations to come.
Happy World Environment Day 2026.
