Ndeiya Akiwa Farm: The Shining Benchmark of Sustainable Agriculture in Kenya

Ndeiya Akiwa Farm, the largest organic farm in Kikuyu Constituency stands as a remarkable testament to what visionary leadership, innovation, and unwavering commitment to sustainability can achieve. Under the stewardship of Mr. Joe Gacanja and his family, the farm has transformed into a true paragon of environmental responsibility and a beacon of hope for the future of agriculture.

Strategically positioned near the legendary Ng’amba area, famed for serving the finest mbuzi choma in the region and for a kitchen fire that has reportedly burned unextinguished for 27 years (a tale for another day), the farm is a marvel that greets every visitor with inspiration.

The first impression upon entering Ndeiya Akiwa Farm is one of breathtaking transformation. In a region once classified as a hardship area due to acute water scarcity, Mr. Gacanja drilled a borehole that became nothing short of an oasis for the people of Ndeiya. At the gate stands a community water kiosk, providing residents with a lifeline that reshaped local livelihoods.

Inside the expansive compound lies an impeccably murramed parking area, modern offices, high-quality training facilities, and well-designed fodder houses for the dairy unit. The farm is fully powered by green energy, boasting both solar installations and an impressive biogas plant, the first biogas generator I ever encountered was right here. Every corner of the farm reflects innovation and purpose.

Ndeiya Akiwa Farm is a haven of abundance: flourishing fruit orchards featuring apples and oranges, a vibrant variety of vegetables suited to the region, and one of the most modern dairy facilities in the constituency. Its water storage capacity is exceptional, and the biogas produced on-site has the potential to supply over 500 households. The farm’s milk output could comfortably support an entire village. It is truly a model of self-sustaining agricultural excellence.

As Kenya advances toward sustainability, food security, Vision 2030, and the Sustainable Development Goals, Ndeiya Akiwa Farm emerges as the premier training and demonstration centre for climate-smart agriculture, an industry that remains the backbone of our economy.

The farm has trained both local and international farmers, students, and professionals. It has also hosted high-ranking dignitaries, including ministers from various nations, who leave astonished by the ingenuity and productivity on display.

Although a significant portion of Kenya falls within the ASAL regions, Mr. Gacanja has demonstrated loudly and convincingly that successful farming in such areas is not only possible but also scalable. His work stands as a bold statement that food security in Kenya, and indeed across Africa, is attainable.
